Help with Searching

Help with Searching: Advanced

SEARCHING MADE EASY

These help pages will run you through how to use our Simple Search and the additional features of our Advanced Search as well as how to understand the results it generates and refine your search.

WEB WOMBAT ADVANCED SEARCH

The Web Wombat Advanced Search is much like a Simple Search, but provides you with more options.

The choices below the search box are used to specify how you would like the words you entered to be used by the search engine.

You will notice that the 'Any Words' button is the default setting so if you don't choose an option, the Web Wombat search engine will search for web pages that contain any of the words you entered.

Any Words
Web Wombat will search for web pages that contain any of the words you entered.
For example, if you type tree frog in the search box and select the 'Any Words' option, some of the results may contain the word tree, some may contain the word frog and some may contain both tree and frog. The results are returned with the pages with the most words ahead of those with the least.

All Words
Web Wombat will search for web pages that contain all of the words that you entered.
For example, if you type the words tree and frog in the search box and select the 'All Words' option, Web Wombat will only search for web pages that include both the word tree and the word frog.

Any order
The words will be present anywhere on the page. Some may be at the beginning of the page while others could be elsewhere in the document.

Exact match
Web Wombat will search for items that contain the exact match you entered.
For example, to find only pages about green tree frogs, you would type green tree frog and select the 'Exact Match' option.

Exclude the words
If you want to exclude certain words from the search, you should enter these keywords(s) in the 'Exclude the words' box. For example, if you have typed the words tree frog in the search box, by entering the word toad in the 'exclude the words' box, Web Wombat will search for web pages with tree frog but not toad.

You can use the radio buttons menu to restrict your search to web pages from Australia or New Zealand or to search on our World Search engine

Web Wombat doesn't recognise boolean operators, such as AND and OR, although the advanced search options actually cover many of them. Words such as AND and OR are treated as stop-words - words that are so common the English language can't be written or spoken without them. For example: 'it', and 'the'. Web Wombat does not index stop-words and ignores them when used in a search.
