SEARCHING MADE EASY
These help pages will run you through how to use our Simple
Search and the additional features of our Advanced
Search as well as how to understand the results it generates
and refine your search.
RESULT LISTINGS
The Web Wombat search will provide you with a list of results
that match your search. Don't worry if you receive a large
number of results, the most relevant ones will be displayed
first.
Web Wombat automatically places results that contain all or
most of your search words first in the listing. Subsequent
results contain fewer words until finally those that contain
only a single word appear. The success Web Wombat rates for
each result is noted as a percentage in brackets at the bottom
of each entry. i.e. (98%)
At the top of the search results page, you will find a summary
of the number of times each word was found. Each entry on
the results page includes the title of the document and a
brief description.
Beside the title is a percentage to indicate relevancy. Below
each description is the document's URL. To open the page in
the same window click on the title, which is underlined or
to open in a second window, click the "Go There" image
The words you searched on are highlighted in bold in the results.
This is handy because it enables you to quickly see where
the words you entered appear in each result. The more words
in bold, generally the better the search match.
The coding is also handy in that it quickly shows how the
search words appear in context. Web Wombat was the first search
engine in the world to start coding search words in its results
listings.
REFINE YOUR SEARCH CRITERIA
You can refine your search by changing your keywords, or excluding
words, and repeating your search. If you have entered commonly
used words, it may be better to refine your search using more
specific words or a different combination of words for more
specific results.
Some words are commonly used (i.e. Australia) while
others rarely so (i.e. desalination). Use many common
words in a search or few, perhaps even a single, rare word.
You can determine how common a word is from the word list
provided at the top of every search.
HINTS
Make sure you are as precise as you can be when entering search
criteria and confine yourself to words that best describe
what you are searching for.
Avoid unnecessary, irrevelant words.
A full name is better. Sean Connery as opposed to Connery.
Check your spelling.
For sporting results including a year can help you find the
result you are after.
Remember that when you are in a Vertical Search Engine you
do not need to mention the category. ie Computer Games in
the GameBlitz engine.
