NSW Aboriginal Employment Initiaves
The
NSW department of employment has confirmed its stance on how it values
the unique skills, experience and knowledge Aboriginal and Torres
Straits Islander peoples have to offer, and are encouraging careers
within the government and working to ensure Aboriginal peoples
play an increasing role in the education and training of young
Australians.
There are a wide range of opportunities for Aboriginal peoples to work
in NSW schools, TAFEs, in the regional and state offices and within NSW
senior executive service.
The NSW department currently have two types of jobs; those for
identified Aboriginal peoples, and mainstream positions open to all
candidates.
If a job you interested in applying for has been advertised as an
Aboriginal position you will need to inform the appropriate authorities
about your Aboriginality.
There are three things which are important:
Being of Aboriginal descent
Identifying as an Aboriginal person
Being accepted by the Aboriginal community as an Aboriginal person
Further to this initiative, the NSW Government aims to ensure all four year olds, including those in remote
communities, have access to a preschool program by 2013, with more
Aboriginal people participating in and completing Vocational Education
and Training courses at higher qualification levels.
The 2008 achievement gap in reading and numeracy between Aboriginal and
non-Aboriginal students was reduced by 50 percent by 2012, and it's
hoped all but eliminated by 2016.
