Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

TESOL is an acronym from Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. It refers to the use and study of the English language by natives of a country who do not speak English. English is fast emerging as a global language. Business at the international level are carried out in English. Even non-native English speakers are switching over to English to facilitate their day to day activities and businesses. A TESOL job holds great value today than it did even a decade back. Not only is it more lucrative, but it allows the opportunity of travel, intermingling of cultures, and makes for all round development of one's career capabilities.

All that said, a TESOL job is not necessarily all play and no work. It requires the person holding the job to mingle freely with the natives of the country to whom the teaching is being imparted. This has different levels of difficulty varying from country to country. For instance an English language teacher in Germany would find it easier to make learners understand English than a teacher, say, in China. This is because native German speakers would find it easier to grasp the nuances of English and English grammar than native Chinese speakers, as German is closer to English than Chinese.

Also, in the initial stages, the English that the learners would speak and write would be heavily interlaced with their native language or mother tongue. Errors in syntax, grammar, spellings, and intonation would be very common. Moreover, culture clashes may stand in the way of effective teaching, but that should not let you down. Some cultures in Central Asia view classroom teaching as redundant. So an English language teacher in China might find himself or herself frustrated while teaching English, as the students may at first find it difficult to adjust to such a scenario. However, great emphasis is placed on individual teacher-student relationships in Asia. A teacher might want to take advantage of that!

So a TESOL job is not just teaching a language it is also learning and intermingling with a new culture. Keep that in mind if you want to start working in this exciting field.

There are many online resources providing TESOL certificate courses. Before enrolling into such a course, it is important to check the credentials of the course provider or the institute and how much job assistance would they provide you, just in case.
