Elysium
Sneak Peek at "Elysium"
The festival of "dire future" movies continues! Yes, this years cinematic theme seems to be "a world, but not as we know it". From Tom Cruise's Oblivion, to Will Smith's After Earth and now Matt Damon's Elysium... the future does indeed seem like a grim place to live.
This latest one seems to have a little more promise than the others as it's created by the man who surprised everyone with the glorious sci-fi movie District 9. The look of Elysium certainly feels like the cousin of District 9 (without directly copying it) so hopefully we get the same level of popcorn fun mixed with serious subtext this time around.
The story has been kept tightly under wraps. What we do know is this : It's set in the year 2154, a time where only two classes of folks exist (very wealthy people who live on a pristine man made space station called Elysium, and the rest who live on a ruined Earth).
Before I go any further, what's our obsession with Space Stations? Just make it float in the sky of earth... does it really need to be out in space?
Anyhow, apparently the people left on Earth are desperate to escape - but, not surprisingly, the folks of Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens' luxurious lifestyle.
See... subtext... subtle...
Only man with the chance to bring equality to these two worlds - Matt Damon.
Look, this could be some heavy handed immigration analogy, or it could be a fun sci-fi adventure. Let's hope it's a bit of both.
