Man Of Steel - Official Soundtrack Preview - Hans Zimmer
Superman is heading back to cinemas after a brief hiatus following the technically financially successful, but critically panned, "Superman Returns". This time Warner Bros are taking no risks with this second reboot of the Superman franchise, enlisting the help of their Batman saviour Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) as producer for The Man Of Steel.
They are doing their darnedest to stick to what worked for The Dark Knight Trilogy, even down to a score from Academy Award Winner Hans Zimmer.
I've been a big fan of Zimmer for a long, long time. His Gladiator soundtrack was on heavy rotation during my formative years, as has his The Dark Knight and Inception scores. People also seem to talk up The Pirates Of The Caribbean score, but I, to this day, refuse to believe that it is anything other than a direct rip off of his own work from Gladiator.
Anyhew, as The Man Of Steel's release draws near, the leaks and promo trail grows stronger. Today saw the release of Hans Zimmer's Man Of Steel soundtrack preview. Running at just over 30 minutes, the preview give you what is, essentially, an iTunes preview of the entire painting. Giving you grasps of brilliance before fading them away.
I must admit, as movie scores go, there are two things that should never be messed with: Superman and Star Wars. The John Williams penned epics are just as much part of the family as Superman's "S" or Chewbacca's furry balls. So while I appreciate and am excited with what Zimmer's done here (especially the roaring, drum beat driven "Look To The Stars"), will I be ultimately upset when THE Superman theme DOESN'T appear?
I loved Danny Elfman's Batman theme, and initially felt robbed when it didn't appear in Nolan's trilogy - but Zimmer's work, while grittier and far less fun, was nothing short of gut tightening and inspiring. He creates fight music in its purest form.
Whether or not having The Man Of Steel's sound scape resemble The Dark Knight so closely will work against the flick (in that it cock blocks it from forging its own identity) remains to be seen. I for one will give this team the benefit of the doubt... for now... after all, this is the same studio who happily released Green Lantern.
For those interested in spoilers, be sure to take a look at the names of the track listing on the soundtrack. It gives us a little insight in to whether or not we see Clark Kent, whether or not Superman wins or loses... and what the sequel is promising.
