Triple J Hottest 100 2012

There is is. Done and dusted for another year. It's crazy how quickly the Triple J Hottest 100 comes and goes these days. Perhaps that's more a sign of my own biological clock ticking by, but let's just pretend there is some kind of wormhole time vortex that has allowed us to skip months and months at a time, returning us to a point of origin.

The biggest trend to notice here is the abundance of Aussie hip hop. What was once a niche genre, and prior to that almost non existent, is to this decade what Powderfinger and Something For Kate were for 2000 - 2010. Personally, it's not my cup of tea, but then again, I don't even drink tea - so who am I to judge?

There have been some complaints from "traditionalists" that the countdown has become far to mainstream, thanks to the broad reaching impact of Facebook voting and also the "hipster trend" where cool kids live in disguise as losers. But, whose to say it hasn't always been that way, and there just wasn't as much Instagram'd photo proof to cement the idea into the public psyche.

I must admit, 100 - 80 is a pretty average bag of songs. All fine songs in their own right, excellent "background" songs to have on in the car - but nothing that you could really see yourself blasting loudly in 5 years time.

Onto the next round. There are some smash hits on offer here from bands who hit it big on the Hottest 100 a few years back. So we're talking the likes of Muse, The Shins and The Presets - bands who are most likely making the chart based on previous brownie points rather than the quality of their newer material.

This makes me sound a tad cynical... but that's just what the Government WANT us to believe...

So here we go, sit back and relax and enjoy the rest of the countdown, just as it was played live on air. It makes you feel like you're really there. You can relive your annoyance with chart positionings every single day... GROUNDHOG DAY!

To tell you who took out the #1 spot (in case you already don't know) would deprive you of the joy of the countdown experience. It's one of the few joys left in life, so press play, and stream this puppy at work all day!
