Thir13en Ghosts

Review by James Anthony

Not really knowing what Thir13en Ghosts was all about it went into the player with no great expectations whatsoever. What came out was a pretty damn enjoyable hour-and-a-half of thrills and chills.

Now, that having been said, this is no The Exorcist or The Omen, but rather a flashy and interesting take on an old genre.

Instead of the haunted house of old Uncle Cyrus (F. Murray Abraham) being a dark and spooky old mansion, it is an ultramodern, well-lit house of glass.

And not only is it filled with beautiful objects, but also 12 of the most terrifying ghosties you'll ever not-want-to meet.

They include the Juggernaut, a two-metre collossus of immense strength, the Jackal, a head-caged maniac, the Angry Princess, a beautiful woman who scarred herself with a massive kitchen knife before committing suicide.

The tormented souls are trapped in the house and, after Cyrus's untimely death, become the welcoming committee for his nephew whose family is trying to get its life back together after the death of its wife/mother.

Joining the grieving Arthur (Tony Shalhoub) is his daughter Kathy (Shannon Elizabeth), son Bobby (Alec Roberts) and their housekeeper.

The family doesn't realise that they are in extreme danger and can't begin to see the goings on until they put on special glasses. Then they see all the horrors heading towards them and the fun begins.

Fortunately they get some assistance from a former employee of Cyrus' (Matthew Lillard), who may just be able to save them.

How you react to Thir13en Ghosts will depend very much how you approach it. I enjoyed it and thought the overrall movie good fun. Mrs Anthony, a usually fine judge of a movie, was not so enthused - although she did jump on a number of occasions.

Conclusion: Movie 80%, Extras 85%
