27 Dresses

27 Dresses
Review by Anthony Morris

Jane (Katherine Heigl) has spent her whole adult life helping out at other people's weddings. She has also spent most of her adult life with a massive crush on her boss (Ed Burns).

So when her model sister breezes into town and promptly makes a move on Jane's boss (a move that leads to a proposal) she is in a bit of a rough situation.

Things aren't exactly helped by Kevin (James Marsden), a cynical yet charming journalist working the weddings beat, who thinks he has found a great story in Jane and her closet full of 27 bridesmaid dresses.

27 Dresses

Ok, so this is so formulaic they might as well hand you a checklist as you walk into the cinema so you can cross off the cliches as they occur:

- Wedding montage set to song? Check.
- Singing together in a bar as a way to show characters falling in love? Check.
- Feisty yet slutty best friend? Check.

But somehow it all works thanks, in no small part, to the charm and comedy skills of Katherine Heigl.

She makes Jane into someone you can believe would be both lovable and a doormat, someone dying inside for her boss to notice her, yet self-confident enough to give Kevin the brush-off.

And speaking of Kevin, after this and his performances in Hairspray and Enchanted, Marsden is officially the best romantic leading man in Hollywood today.

This film has its flaws, but seeing these two playing off each other is just about enough to make you forget them.

DVD EXTRAS with Sean Lynch

If the movie wasn't fluffy enough, the good folks in the DVD department have decided to throw on a sickly sweet bunch of featurettes which follow every cliche in the book (you know the drill "Just an amazing director", "he was so much fun to be around on set" - and all that jazz).

The deleted scenes are somewhat pointless, and you have to wonder why a bloopers reel is missing from proceedings.

None the less, if you loved the movie and want to see just that little bit more of all your favourite actors in action, then this is probably going to suit you just fine.

Conclusion: Movie 65% Extras: 50%
