28 Days Later

Review by James Anthony

Just imagine waking up from a coma to discover that your city is being overrun by zombie-like humans that just want to rip you limb from limb.

Not much fun at all.

So think on how poor Jim (Cillian Murphy) reacts when he becomes the target of these rage-filled killers. So what has happened?

Well, it is like this. The good old science community has been working a rage virus that sets monkeys feral with a need to kill. Some even more sensible animal-rights activists ignore the appeals of those scientists and release the infected monkeys.

Within minutes they are all dead and within 28 so is most of Britain.

Stumbling through an eerily deserted London (and haven't we all thought how great that would be while fighting through crowds and traffic) Jim is saved from the zombies by two people, one of whom is Selena (Naomie Harris).

They discover a father and daughter - Frank (Brendan Gleeson) and Hannah (Megan Burns) - who have also managed to survive and after hearing an emergency radio broadcast embark on a risky journey seeking safety.

28 Days Later is an excellent, thoughtful post-apocalyptic thriller that admittedly does have more than a touch of Resident Evil. But it is good stuff and will bring out the chills both physically and mentally as you ponder "could it really happen?".

The transfer is deliberately shot in a documentary style so don't expect bright colours and razor-sharpness. The sound is not a major player in the movie.

Conclusion: 80% Extras: 75%.
