Steely Dan: Two Against Nature

It's hard to recall the first time a Steely Dan record made an impression upon these formerly young ears, but it was a long time ago.

It could have been Rikki Don't Lose That Number, The Royal Scam, Kid Charlemagne or any one of the huge number of hits that Walter Becker and Donald Fagen created.

Their fantastic blending of music styles has mixed just about every form you can think of - and then chucked in another few for good measure.

Trying to beat the peak-hour, traffic-jam blues is pretty tough, but a Steely Dan CD in the stereo seems to ease you through the hassles.

So when the package arrived the other day it was with lightning speed that Two Against Nature flew into the DVD player and the world of bills, arguing littlies and what-do-I-do-for-dinner disappeared.

The DVD is shot with Steely Dan live at the Sony Music stages in New York and has a really comfortable feel. It's like you sit down in a comfy armchair in their living room and just let the music ease its way over you as the guys practise for a show.

Fagen's vocals are very subdued but his body language screams an attitude that says: "If I cared who Mick Jagger was ... I'd bet I'm a better strutter!"

Steely Dan is famed for its excellent backing musos and they sure put on a terrific show with the likes of Cornelius Bumpus, Ted Baker and John Herrington doing their stuff. The female backing trio (two of whom are dallying with the maestros) is absolutely hot.

The pick of the tracks is Babylon Sisters and if that doesn't turn non-believers into Steely Dan fans then there's something wrong. To show how powerful it is, a three-year-old Thomas the Tank Engine fanatic stopped playing with the blue No.1 train for two minutes and sat goggle-eyed at the TV. Unprecedented!

On top of the fantastic music, the concert is broken up with really nice interviews with Becker and Fagen, the backing musicians and vocalists, fans in the street and even the bloke who takes out the rubbish ... just kidding on that one.

It is informative, entertaining and, at times, a real hoot.

If you like Steely Dan then it's almost worth buying a DVD player to watch this.

Conclusion: Rating: 90%
