The Four Feathers

This is a great adventure following a man's journey to redeem himself in the eyes of his friends and loved ones after he is sent four white feathers for cowardice.

It is Victorian Britain and the Empire is at its height. British armies control most of the world, although they have struck trouble in the Sudan and the famed General Gordon has been murdered after the fall of Khartoum.

Henry Faversham (John Clements) is an officer in the Surrey regiment who resigns his commission on the eve of a new army being sent out to punish the Sudanese. His brother officers, including a young Ralph Richardson, send him the feathers, as does his fiancée for whom he has quit the military.

Shamed, and regarded as a blight on the army heritage of his family, Henry travels to the Sudan alone determined to prove his bravery and getting the men to take their tokens of dishonour back.

He disguises himself as a native and endures extreme hardships in his efforts to win back his pride and prove himself.

We won't go into all the wheres and whys, but The Four Feathers moves quickly, is filled with some terrific characters and has some excellent action and battle scenes. Watch for the venerable C. Aubrey Smith's marvelous performance as the old general.

This DVD version seems to be released at the original length of 130 minutes, with 15 minutes more viewing than you'll see on video or on the cretin box.

The film is not the most pristine you'll see - there are a lot of spots and marks - but overall is very good with only a few minor examples of aliasing. The image is sharp and the colour fine. The mono sound does lack a bit of oomph, and you will need to turn your system up to cater for that.

This a beauty for those who love to relax in front of Sunday afternoon movies.

Conclusion: Movie 85% Extras: 55%
