8 Women

There are few things better than a good who-dunnit and even fewer things better than an all-female cast of A-grade French stars.

How about this lot. Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuelle Beart and Fanny Ardant - then add Virginie Ledoyen and Ludivine Sagnier into the mix.

The movie is 8 Women (Huit Femmes) and is a mystery about the death of a rich man in 1950s France and which of the women closest to him did him in.

As the story unravels it seems that any of them - his wife, sister, mother-in-law, servants or even his daughters - could have committed the crime that ended with him lying face down on his bed with a whopping great knife poking out of his back.

8 Women is not only a crime movie, but a comedy and, of all things, a musical as the women break into song - a la Chicago - to explain more about themselves and the relationship with the victim.

Not being an expert of French 1950s pop culture I am presuming the songs are of the era and are quite pretty little numbers. The gals are great and their rivalries and bitterness emerge the longer the show goes.

8 Women is a tad different, but is an enjoyable romp.
