Ace Lightning

While better than most adult shows on the Cretin Box, children's entertainment often walks a fine line between ordinary/bland and good fun.

It is almost as if the people making the shows forget that they need to please the kids rather than the parents.

Well, an absolute beauty of a children's TV series has hit DVD and if you are any parent at all you'll go out and get it for the youngsters.

It's called Ace Lightning and it is as clever a piece of live action and CGI-film-making that you will ever see. Adults will enjoy it - gamers even more so - and teenagers will love it to bits.

The hero of the yarn is 13-year-old Mark Hollander (Tom Wansey), a British boy who moves to America with his folks. He hasn't had time enough to mix with his new schoolmates and so his computer game Ace Lightning gets a bit of a workout.

Then, one dark and stormy night, a bolt of lightning hits his house and somehow brings the characters of the game to life.

The CGI bad guys are the evil Lord Fear, Lady Illusion, Anvil, Pigface, a flying rat and Googler. The CGI hero is Ace Lightning, an all-round superhero and good guy.

Mark now has to juggle trying to help Ace save the world from the evil crew - and stop his classmates from thinking he's a loony.

As you would expect the school is pretty much standard teen stuff - his love interest is the most popular girl Samantha (Shadia Simmons) - and there are bullies galore.

However, the part of Chuck 'Upchuck" Mogel (Marc Minardi) is wonderfully gross and will have you laughing (while covering your eyes and shaking your head) until you're sick.

As said before the live characters mix seamlessly with the superb-looking computer creations and the blend makes it look like they are all there in real life.

If you have youngsters (7-14) and don't go out and get Ace Lightning immediately you are ratbags. At least consider it for the too-fast-approaching Christmas stocking.

Conclusion: 85% Extras: 65%
