Details at a glance...

American Outlaws
(2001)
Roadshow Entertainment
92 minutes
M15+

Director: Les Mayfield.

Cast:
Colin Farrell, Scott Caan, Ali Larter, Gabriel Macht, Tim Dalton and Gregory Smith.

Format: Widescreen. Single-sided, dual-layer disc.

Language: English. Dolby Digital 5.1.

Subtitles: English - Hearing Impaired.

Extras: Theatrical trailer, director's audio commentary, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes.

Comments: Not a bad little package of extras at all. There is an excellent commentary with director Les Mayfield, writer John Rogers and editor Michael Tronick and four short (between 4 and 8 minutes) featurettes on The Making Of (brief interviews with cast and director), Creating The Old West (building an old fashioned western town), How To Be An Outlaw (taking cowboy classes) and Costuming The Cowboys.

For mine the level of detail in building the set was very interesting but the pick of the bunch was the voice over of the costume designer explaining how the main characters were outfitted and the reasons for their different styles.

There are two deleted scenes Jesse and Frank argue and Jim and Layla and I reckon they both would have added a little extra if included in the released movie. The former shows a slightly nervy out-of-control side to Jesse James (probably a more realistic portrayal of him) and the latter a nice little introduction of the youngest gang member to a woman of bad repute.
