Angel Heart

Having seen Angel Heart a number of times over the years it is one of those movies I can pick off the shelf and sit down to knowing I am about to thoroughly enjoy a voodoo-satanic crime thriller.

It is also one of the surprisingly long list of Mickey Rourke movies that can be put in the much shorter well-worth seeing list.

Angel Heart is a detective yarn following Johnny Angel (Rourke) who is hired by a mysterious Louis Cyphere (Robert De Niro) to track down a bloke who owes him a debt.

The debtor is one Johnny Favourite, a no-account singer, who has clearly miffed Cyphere big-time.

Set in 1950s America, the action soon heads for the South where Angel discovers major links - and problems - between the missing fellow and voodoo.

Pretty soon our private investigator is getting a little wary as many of the folk he has just been see have ended up dead - and he doesn't want to be blamed and become a well-fried PI on the electric chair.

As he follows the leads, Angel's journey takes him you through the wonderfully photographed Old South where you can almost smell the humidity and decay.

Still more folk die and then Angel meets Epiphany Proudfoot (Lisa Bonet) an stunningly gorgeous single mother who also just so happens to be the local voodoo priestess. They hit it off well - very well indeed and you'll get to see a pretty interesting bedroom encounter that was hacked out of movie.

Anyway to cut a long story shortish, the conclusion to Angel Heart is interesting, if not exactly mind-blowing.

There are some terrific performances and Rourke's efforts are possibly his best. Bonet looks heavenly while De Niro's role will stay in your mind.

Angel Heart is not kiddies' viewing and has a surperbly oppressive atmosphere that adds to mystery and tension.

Conclusion: Movie 90% Extras 60%
