There he meets her mother Jean (Judi Dench), an old flame
of some forty years before. Can or should the candle be relit?
Yes, and eight series later we know a plethora of delightful
characters representing the best of British light comedy.
Judith's suitor Alistair Deacon (Philip Bretherton), a flaky
entrepreneur; Harry (David Michaels), posted to Canada, who
wants to marry Sandy (Jenny Funnel) and other sub plots that
further complicate the already confused domestic scene.
But it's the two lead actors and the production talent that
makes the show stand out.
Judi Dench, recipient of many acting honours (Oscar, BAFTA,
Golden Globe, Olivier) for her roles as Queen Elizabeth I
in Shakespeare in Love, Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown,
and M in the later 'James Bond' movies.
Geoffrey Palmer, a veteran of a host of television sitcoms
including: The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin, Butterflies
and Grumpy Old Men.
Bob Larry, writer of many funny scripts, The Dick Emery Show,
Please Sir! A Fine Romance (also starring Judi Dench) and
The Good Life.
Sydney Lotterby, producer and director whose credits include
Last Of The Summer Wine, Open All Hours, Yes Minister and
many more successful shows.
If you've had a hard day at the office, sit down; watch an
episode of 'As Time Goes By' and you'll feel better.
Conclusion: Movie 85%
