Blackadder 2

The second series in the adventures of the Blackadder family leaps forward from England's War of the Roses into the Elizabethan Age.

This time around Edmund Blackadder is not a slimey, stupid little weasel, but is an amusing, cutting wit who does his best to keep his head when many others are losing their's.

He is, however, very unlucky and no matter how cunning is his plan, it all turns to stuff that smells like Baldrick's breath pretty quickly.

In the first series Blackadder's great rival was his older brother. In Blackadder 2 the queen's chief advisor, Lord Melchett (Stephen Fry), is his nemesis.

Returning is Tony Robinson as Baldrick, Tim McInnerny as the cretinous Lord Percy, and the new characters include Miranda Richardson as Queenie and Patsy Byrne as Nursie.

There are six episodes in the series and a one-night sitting should see you through them as together they run just under three hours.

First up is Bells, where a beautiful young lass runs away from the profession her father has chosen for her - prostitution - and instead becomes a manservant for Lord Blackadder. This leads to major complications when the pair fall in love. Watch out for Rik Mayall playing a stud sailor, Lord Flashheart.

In Head, Edmund takes over England's execution service with disastrous results for several high-ranking chaps. Problems occur when Queenie wants to say goodbye to them - after they've had the chop.

Potato has Edmund and his servants sailing around the world with the completely mad Redbeard (Tom Baker). His return after years at sea and escaping from cannibals impresses the Queen, until she finds out he hasn't brought her a pressie ...

Money has a financially-strapped Blackadder trying to avoid being poked up the bottom with a red-hot poker by the exceedingly nasty Bishop of Bath and Wells (Ronald Lacey). Despite his best efforts at paying back the 1000 pounds he owes the evil bishop, nothing seems to go right until...

In Beer, Blackadder is facing personal problems with a puritanical aunt. Needless to say, his wanton lifestyle takes a turn for the worse.

The final episode is Chains and sees our Edmund kidnapped and tortured by a lunatic Spanish inquisitor and a dastardly German spy who can disguise himself as almost anything.

This is a hugely funny series and the quality of the DVD is much better than Blackadder 1, with a much cleaner picture on offer. The sound is very good, although is only in stereo.

Fans will love this DVD.

Conclusion: Rating 85%
