Barney's Night Before Christmas

While the festive spirit is still about, we should take time out to mention a fun DVD that the kids will love all year around.

It's Barney's Night Before Christmas and before any more is said, there was a determined effort - on my part - to stop my kids seeing the package. (I have had an aversion to Barney since seeing the simpering, toothy, prancing little erks that sing along with him.)

Anyway, the youngsters found the DVD and, having risked death by a thousand moans to save them from the large purple dinosaur, the supposed ruler of the house eventually succumbed. Then she told me to put the disc on to keep Beastie 1 and 2 happy.

So, kissing goodbye to instilling them with ABC-quality shows only, Barney popped up and … they haven't looked back.

It is a cheerful, fun 50-minute adventure filled with heaps of Christmas tunes, colourful sets and an easy-to-follow plot.

Barney and his dinosaur pals, Baby Bop and BJ, take four vomit-inducing American brats in hand to visit Santa Claus and help with the Xmas orders. (Just how dear old Santa can say ho, ho, ho with some of these kids is absolutely beyond me!)

In addition, there are two storybooks - Barney's Christmas Surprise and Barney's Wonderful Winter Day - which Barney can read or older little ones can check out for themselves, sing-along Christmas songs - Winter's Wonderful, Deck the Halls, Oh Christmas Tree, Jingle Bells, We Wish You a Merry Christmas - an interactive area (for those with DVD players on their computers) and some previews of new Barney material.

The images are bright and clear, with the transfer working exceedingly well considering the multi-hued backgrounds and the stereo sound is perfectly acceptable.

Forgive the anti-Barney stance, because this really is a very enjoyable DVD for the littlies - this has been proven time, after time, after time, after time - and … we'll 'fess up … you'll probably catch adults humming along to it as well.

Conclusion: Movie 80%, Extras 80%
