Review by Sean Lynch

You have to wonder what state your relationship is in when, while holidaying on a tropical island of infinite beauty, your girlfriend is asleep in one room and you (a twenty something grown adult) is sitting on the couch watching Batman : The Brave & The Bold on cable.

For better or worse, that was my first experience with the latest Dark Knight spin-off for kids. And, again - for better or worse, I hope it isn't my last.

batman

Yes, the man they call Bruce Wayne has been in more film, TV and animated incarnations than you can throw a bat-erang at. By and large (excusing Batman & Robin and Batman : The Original TV Series), they have all been pretty faithful and fun adaptions of the classic novel.

So what do we make of
Batman : The Brave & The Bold?

Clearly not taking itself to seriously (a huge 360 tonal change from the cult and ground breaking 1990s Batman : The Animated Series), Brave & The Bold has quite a lot going for it.

There is more than enough in-jokey goodness to keep the die hard fans on side (thanks to a slew of all-star character cameos including the likes of Aquaman, Plastic Man and Red Tornado), as well as just the right amount of silliness mixed with action that will keep the kiddies glued to the TV and out of their parents hair for 20 odd minutes.

The inclusion of Drew Carey and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back star, Diedrich Bader, doesn't hurt the comedy either, as the guy knows how to time a gag or two.

A nice, clean animation style also works well with the rubbery action - making Batman : The Bold & The Brave one of the best ways to introduce a newby to the DC Universe.

However, for future reference, if you are on a tropical island and you see it on the box... turn the TV OFF, grab it on DVD when you get off the plane - and watch it once you've LEFT the tropical island! Your prospective partners will be eternally grateful!

DVD Special Features

No surprisingly, Batman : The Bold & The Brave - Volume 1 is void of any extras. No doubt they will be held of, if there are any, for the inevitable Box Set.

What you do get for your buck are four exciting episodes from the hit series including Rise Of The Blue Beetle!, Terror On Dinosaur Island!, Evil Under The Sea! and Invasion Of The Secret Santas!.

And yes... every episode MUST have the "!" included...

Conclusion: Movie 80% Extras: N/A
