He is a banker, well ... bank teller, and lives a comfortable
but boring life by himself. It's not that he's deformed -
he's not bad looking and is a fit sort of guy - it's just
he's, well, socially challenged.
So our John decides to hop on the Net and order up a bride.
He wants a woman who he can talk to, so she needs to speak
English, and really she just needs to be nice.
In walks Nadia (Nicole Kidman) who speaks English - one word
only - chain smokes and after a bit of a cool start turns
into a bit of a hottie.
The couple seem to get on well despite all the hurdles, until
one day Nadia's cousin and a friend turn up. Now, needless
to say, our John gets a little suspicious about the two chaps
and soon finds himself involved in a siatuation that means
deep trouble. Deep enough to be utterly life-changing.
Birthday Girl is a good solid semi-comedy, semi-romance,
semi-thriller that has two very good lead actors in Chaplin
and Kidman. He plays the banker sympathetically and never
as a moron or a jerk - just a lonely guy. Kidman never goes
over the top as the Russian girl and her performance is both
alluring and understated.
This is an enjoyable evening's viewing that may surprise
some as to how good it is. The video transfer is extremely
good and, while the sound effort doesn't match the images,
it is fine.
Conclusion: Movie 80% Extras: 55%
