Bedazzled

Hands up all those out there in cyberland who have a nerd section in your company?

You know, the lightless office that's filled with fast-food containers, "Linux is Good" stickers, half-used bottles of Brut 33, cigarette packets and comics.

No-one? Yup, Everyone! Thought so, and don't you sort of feel a tad sorry for them as they inch around the offices trying to engage people in conversation about footy (they've got great screens at the MCG), cricket (did you see the pixelation on the replays), weather (humidity has a delitarious effect upon circuitry) and cuisine (man, those new chickenmcyukwoppas are excellent when you're D&Ding).

Well, in Bedazzled, the main man is Elliot (Brendan Fraser). A nerd. A geek. A computer chap.

He's not good with people and his undeveloped communication skills make him a hazard around the building as people fight to get out of his way. Oh, he's likeable, but SOOOO boring.

He's besotted by a fellow worker, but in four years of working together has not had the courage to talk to her. Poor Elliot becomes so desperate that when a hot-to-trot Devil (Liz Hurley) picks him as her next soul to grab in exchange for seven wishes, he takes the chance with both hands.

Trouble is, the Devil is a cunning swine and while Elliot reckons he's stitched up a watertight wish, she manages to swing it around so that not only is it wasted, but it's a nightmare as well.

My two favourites are the basketball superhero and being the US president.

Anyway, our Elliot bumbles his way through and is staring down the barrel of an eternity in hell unless he gets some form of help - or the Devil feels sorry for him.

Fraser is extremely likeable as Elliot and it is a far cry from his role in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. He is terrific as a gormless nice guy and painfully easy to feel sorry for in his wish personas.

Liz Hurley has copped a lot of flak for her acting in Bedazzled, but she is perfectly fine. Okay, her timing is not as tight as her revealing outfits, but we are not talking Oscar contention here so what the heck.

Bedazzled is an amusing remake of the Peter Cook and Dudley Moore movie of the same name and while it is not as funny, is an easy way to spend a couple of hours.

Conclusion: Movie 80%, Extras 85%
