In Before Sunset, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy play two people
who had a one night stand nine years previously (the subject
of the movie Before Sunrise) and who, due to circumstances,
were never able to meet again.
Their love, however, was ignited and they have never forgotten
each other so when successful author Jesse (Hawke) is in Paris
for a book signing, Celine (Delpy) heads along to see him.
Jesse has only a few hours in Paris before flying out, but
he is determined not to let her get away again and so they
go for a long walk along the city's picturesque streets.
They discuss their lives in intervening years - including
his marriage and her lovers - and eventually get around to
finding out why she never turned up at a rendezvous in Vienna.
The conversation is so realistic - in being awkward at times
and filled with interjections as they excitedly try to catch
up on lost moments - I thought it was improvised, but it seems
the leads helped with the script so it is more natural.
Before Sunset is a very adult movie with a more mature look
at relationships than most movies allow and both Delpy and
Hawke are terrific and the talented Miss Delpy wrote the music.
It isn't very long, just under 80 minutes, and it carries
you along nicely as you ponder the future for these seemingly
star-crossed lovers.
