Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey

Review by Sean Lynch

There is very little magic left in the world of Hollywood. Starved for content, the whimsical illusions, the tricks that once inspired our young minds have all been demystified. Whether it be via Mythbusters, DVD Special Features that show "how it's done", or simply to our mass expsosure to varying levels of CGI... no matter what, we will never be as absorbed in anyhting as we once were.

However, despite this, despite having seen behind the curtain on more than a few occasions... there is something about Muppets that is utterly transfixing. They've somehow sidestepped being known as "creatures with someones hand up their butt".

It's for this very reason that Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey is not only a facinating insight into the craft of Muppeterring, but also the bearer of a bright spark that will make you fall in love with them all over again.

Most parents are very much aware of Elmo, the child-like fuzzy red Muppet who has become a favourite among Sesame Streets youthful audience.

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey

Far fewer people know the name Kevin Clash, the puppeteer who breathes the life and soul into Elmo. Something of a loner in his youth, Clash found a way to express himself when he discovered puppetry, and showed a remarkable talent for the art.

In Being Elmo we discover the man behind the Muppet, and find that he is as lovable, wise and infinitely positive as his famous character.

A hit at the Sundance Film Festival - where it won the Special Jury Prize - Being Elmo showcases the story behind an oft-forgotten and largely invisible artistry. It also just makes you want to revisit every Muppet moment that you can recall in your own mind.

Hopefully this is just the begining. Sure, Elmo is the supremo puppet at the moment, but it would be wonderful to honour the real legends of the Muppet universe. The originals : Henson, Oz, etc, etc.

Heartwarming, fun and unrelentingly sweet - this is a must watch for young and old.

Conclusion: Movie 90% Extras: 70%
