The main characters are an Egyptian worker, a gladiator and
a rich noble in Pompeii. The noble's life is less interesting
than the others - because we tend to know more about Roman
rich people than most others - but the special effects and
showing how they died is amazing stuff.
The Egyptian worker is very interesting in that I always
thought those working on the giant pyramids were slaves, but
in fact they were conscripted free men who were treated very
well by the pharaoh.
Long days of carving and moving stones were ended by long
night of eating and drinking.
The show on the gladiator follows his adventures from a slave,
to a trainee fighter and on to stardom in the bloody arena
of the Colosseum. There are some great fight scenes in this
and the way the gladiators were treated like sports stars
is not unlike how we treat our top athletes today.
One of the fallacies killed off by this episode is that most
gladiators fought to death in the arena - in fact they were
far too valuable to be knocked off too often and usually were
allowed to live.
The Beyond Imagination series is excellent viewing.
