Bill Bailey Presents
Wild Thing - I Love You

Review by Sean Lynch

Anyone who has seen the cult classic BBC series Black Books will know the face of the oddball human troll that is Bill Bailey. The hair of a hippy, with the musical ability of an 18th centuary classic pianist.

It's an odd mixture - but an ever so enjoyable one.

So upon seeing this great UK comedians name attatched to a new show, the speed in which I threw the disc into the DVD player rivalled that of Stephanie Rice in an Olympic swimming pool.

Bill Bailey : Wild Thing - I Love You

Sadly, there are few laughs on offer here. In fact, this is the sort of wild life saving program even Steve Irwin would avoid. Yep Wild Thing - I Love You is essentially about saving roadkill.

Isn't that pushing conservation one step too far?

The British Channel 4 doco series follows stand-up comedian and Black Books actor Bill Bailey as the unlikely champion of endangered wildlife. Bill and his team of experts - ecologist Dusty Gedge, zoologist Dr Sasha Norris and engineer Jem Stansfield (who really are just a bunch of nerds who are trying to impress and be friends with a cool TV comedy star) - on a mission to save some of the UK's most vulnerable wildlife from human encroachment.

The team must determine possible causes of wildlife problems then try to come up with engineering solutions to solve them - but only have a short time in which to do it.

From critter-crossings to translocation – Bill and his team will stop at nothing to help Britain’s wildlife.

Well, they will stop - plenty of times. It's quite exciting to see a Discovery Channel series in which 20 men wrestle with a giant endangered crocodile in order to find it a new and safe place to continue it's life. However, watching two or three middle aged scientists in fluro orange safety vests standing near a highway looking for mice... well... that's kind of not fun.

Bailey often looks out of his depth, and his various attempts at rustling up some laughs meet deaf ears... thanks largely to the humourless scientist team who wouldn't know sarcasm or a good joke if it bit them on the yellow safety hard hat.

Enviro-nuts will likely find some appeal in this, but for the majority of those tuning in to see Bailey let loose... you will be sorely dissapointed.

A real waste of comedic talent... but I guess it's a good thing for the environment... I guess.

DVD EXTRAS

The series is spread over three discs here, so if this is your kind of thing - it's pretty good value for money.

Not an extra in sight, but there isn't really much more you need to see (honestly, do we really need to see a deleted sequence in which Bill is drinking a coffee while waiting for an animal to come out of it's hidey hole?).

Conclusion: Movie 60% Extras: N/A
