Black Knight

Mark Twain would turn in his grave if he could see how his tale of A Connecticut Yankee in the Court of King Arthur would be treated in the early naughties.

You may even hear him mutter: "What the Huck?"

However, while he was spinning around we might just stop him for a moment and let him know that Black Knight is a rather amusing tale of a time-travelling American who finds himself up to his helm in political trouble some 700 before he was born.

The main man of the film is Jamal "Sky" Walker (Martin Lawrence) who's a bit of a jive dude with a bad work attitude.

Mind you, that's no big surprise as his company - an exceptionally badly maintained Medieval World - is in deep trouble with a new super middle-ages adventure park soon to open.

But, as fate would have it, while cleaning out the park's moat he sees a golden medallion and while trying to grab it falls into the cesspool-like waters.

When he emerges he finds himself in what he thinks is the new rival attraction park, only it just so happens to be the actual 14th Century.

There are some pretty good laughs to be had while he is still discovering the truth and the scene where he teaches the medieval court of the nasty King Leo to boogie to Ride, Sally, Ride is hilarious.

His love interest is the 7th handmaiden to King Leo, the lovely Victoria (Marsha Thomason) and look out for Tom Wilkinson as the once-great knight in desperate need of rehab.

Anyway, our hero discovers that he must finally fight for what he believes in and joins a rebellion against Leo to restore a rather boring old queen to the throne.

One thing about Black Knight is that the production values are excellent. This is no five-person rent-a-crowd job, but a fully fledged effort at portraying a medieval world.

Black Knight is amusing, without being fantastic, and will certainly throw more than a few laughs your way.

It has a fantastic video transfer and an even better audio effort that will have your system purring along nicely.

An uncomplicated and enjoyable tale.

Conclusion: Movie 70%, Extras 50%
