Ooooo-weeeee, I know some mothers can be pretty awful, but boy, George Jung's (Johnny Depp) mother is the worst that's ever, ever been.

In a role that Rachel Griffiths plays like a vicious shopaholic social climber, Mother Jung is enough to make George Dubya Bush cancel Mom's Day.

Not only does she make life hell for George's dad, a wonderful Ray Liotta, but she also dobs her drug-dealing son into the coppers at every chance she gets.

Having seen his dad work his guts out to get nowhere, George promises himself that he will always have loot and so discovers the instant riches of drug-running.

Together with his partner - effete hairdresser Paul Ruebens (an unexpectedly sensational performance) - Jung makes absolute squillions running dope before turning his trade to cocaine. Jung is regarded as being the chap who introduced big-time coke smuggling to the US of A.

Blow is a true story that follows his rise and fall in a very warm hearted way and despite the fact this guy was making money out of dealing in others' misery, it's hard not to like him. If anything the film seems a bit soft on the guy and makes him out to be a nice guy who didn't think of the consequences of his actions.

Depp is terrific, as are Ruebens, Liotta and Griffiths. His Jung is a family oriented hedonist who has a terrific relationship with the apple of his eye, his daughter, and gets married to Penelope Cruz. Tell you what, after seeing her performance as a drug-addled, money-hungry creature - Tom can keep her!

There are a lot of very funny moments in Blow, but it is a nicely balanced drama that draws you in and keeps you wondering how it's going to turn out. Well worth looking at.

In the credits watch out for mention of Jung's daughter - who has a bit part in the film. There are heaps of extras, which include interviews with the man himself, and the transfer is excellent.

Conclusion: Rating: 85%
