There's no way I can do justice to, nor accurately
describe, the insanity of The Bold And The Beautiful in one review.
It's
an on-screen romance novel, featuring the same thin plotting,
over-the-top characterisation and cliche-driven dialogue of said
literary genre.
It's dumb, clunky, and melodramatic, and yet it's one
of the world's most watched shows.
It's a guilty pleasure for millions and a shameless one for millions more. And now you can buy it on DVD.
God help us.
Just because I'm not a fan of B&B doesn't mean I can't appreciate it for what it is; mindless, fun entertainment.
I
know a lot of people who are addicted to it – ranging from nurses to
teachers to mums to daughters – and I understand it's popularity. It's
just so freakin' insane.
This DVD set features 21 fan-picked episodes, ranging from the show's beginning in 1987 to 2004.
The DVD menus are appallingly bad. I have DVDs from nearly ten years ago that are better designed than this.
However, I get the feeling that most B&B fans won't really mind the tackily low-quality background images and stock-standard font; they're here to watch some vintage Bold & The Beautiful and that's all.
This five-disc set was released in late 2008 to celebrate the series' 21st birthday.
To
put that in perspective; this TV show has been alive for the almost
same amount of time as this reviewer (it premiered eleven days after my
birthday).
This set features some of the most ridiculous and
most memorable episodes from the series' 21 long years on the air. I'd
have to think this would be a must-buy for any Bold & The Beautiful fan.
DVD EXTRAS
The fifth disc features two cast photos, a behind the
scenes featurette focusing on the 20th Anniversary party, and
interviews with William Devry, Kyle Lowder and Heather Tom (whoever
they are).
This will probably be sufficient for many Bold & The Beautiful fans, although I'd like to think a commentary or two wouldn't have gone astray.
