If I recall corretly, as a twelve or thirteen year old, I would
sneakily stay up until long after the channel Ten late news had
finished to catch an airing of the odd TV creation. The naughty nature
of the show really struck a chord with me and my friends (I think we
even wrote a couple of "spin off" episodes during "creative writing
time" in Grade Four).
By the time I had hit the early years of High School, my brother and I had "rented" the 1993 VHS copy of Bottom : Live from the local library on more than a few occasions - it wasn't until the end of Year 12 had I been able to hunt down Bottom Live 3 : Hooligans Island (the best of all the live shows in my opinion) and the somewhat poorer Bottom Live 2.
So
to see the first two live shows finally hit DVD was a relief - firstly,
because these excellent shows might finally find a decent sized
audiences... and secondly... I no longer have a VHS player, and the
local library will no longer "rent" out videos to me or my brother
"until we repay the significant late fines". Two completely
different beasts to the TV series (without the need to censor, the
violence and language flies thick and fast and suits the characters to
a tee) the Both Cheeks collection combines the first two live and uncensored stage shows (The Live Stage Show from 1993 and 1995's The Big Number 2 Tour) made famous by Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson.
The
key to the show is the variety of over-the-top slapstick and
spectacularly childish crude sexual innuendo.
Seriously, they make
almost every sentence come back to wanking in one way or another.
The first Bottom LIVE is probably the strongest of the two shows - keeping things simple and to the point. The Big Number 2
suffers for trying to advance (Richie and Eddie are sent to prison) and
really loses a lot of the energy which is the driving force in the
first show.
Well worth checking out, as they are a lot of fun,
especially if you like your comedy as crass as possible. And for those
who are inspired to track down the Bottom movie, Guest House Paridiso, after viewing this... don't - it will just ruin the party. DVD EXTRAS
No extras whatsoever - which is a real shame. Some retrospective interviews would have been superb, but sadly, nothing!
Conclusion:
Movie 85% Extras: N/A
