Based on Robert Ludlum's book, The Bourne Identity
is not the limp late-80s TV effort with Richard Chamberlain,
but a newly crafted thriller starring Matt Damon.
And boy does it work well with Damon entirely believable
as the amnesiac who discovers that not only are people trying
to kill him, but he is more than capable of protecting himself.
His automatic ability with languages, natural understanding
of weapons and his uncanny ability of staying undetected,
point to something not being what it seems with the lad who
was found floating at sea with several bullets in his back.
And until he can work out who he is, and who is trying to
kill him, his enemies have the upper hand.
Along the way he enlists the help of a woman called Marie
(Franka Potente) whose initial doubts are eased by a wad of
banknotes - only for her to discover that now she is also
a target.
Damon is excellent as the lead and while he does have boyish
good looks, has obviously done some serious training and his
fight scenes and weapons-handling drill is utterly realistic.
His journey to discover who he actually is takes the pair
across Europe hunted by professional assassins who have only
one job - to stop them breathing.
Franka Potente is very good and plays her part with plenty
of intelligence. Other key actors - Chris Cooper and Brian
Cox - both hand in fine character portrayals.
The video transfer of The Bourne Identity is superb,
with no faults that these eyes could pick up, and the sound
makes excellent use of the surround speakers.
The Bourne Identity is an exciting, intelligent spy
thriller that will keep you enthralled. Spy thrillers don't
get too much better than this.
Conclusion: 90% Extras: Trailers only on rental version.
