What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?

After Once Were Warriors, with its extreme violence and viciousness, it would be a brave sensitive person who would sit down to watch the sequel.

However, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? is a very different movie and doesn't have the black air of hopelessness that enshrouded the terrible life of those around Jake the Muss (Temuera Morrison).

It is still violent, but there is more of an involving action storyline and while less powerful than its predecessor, is still a movie to be watched.

Jake is still living his wild life, although his wife Beth (Rena Owen) has kicked him out of home for his continual assaults on her. His kids hate him and the oldest boy Nig has joined a Maori gang and now is adorned with fierce face tattoos.

Tragedy quickly strikes as Nig is murdered and his brother Sonny (Clint Eruera), together with Nig's girlfriend Tania (Nancy Brunning), try to avenge the murder by joining a brutal gang themselves.

Meanwhile Jake is destroying himself and his new relationship with excessive drinking but finds himself becoming friends with a couple of construction workers.

These massive Maori guys show him that life is about more than boozing and fighting and Jake slowly comes to realise the damage he has done to his family.

There is a very moving scene where he is apologising to his girlfriend where he hit her - the first and only time - and he lets us see his upbringing where violence was the norm.

Jake is a much more sympathetic character in What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? and his slow change puts a very positive spin into the movie.

The rest of the cast are very well portrayed and make for an entirely believable set of characters, again adding to the power of the situations and movie.

The transfer is very good and there are a lot of dark scenes where its quality passes the test easily. The sound is fine, with the dialogue easily heard. The surround speakers get a little bit of a workout but will not be tested.

If Once Were Warriors left you with a black feeling, then What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? will have you watching the credits with a much more positive view on life.

Conclusion: Movie 85%, Extras 85%
