Brother Bear

Review by James Anthony

Everyone goes through a stage in life - some more than others - when they just can't take advice or be told about the ways of the world.

Inuit teenager Kenai (Joaquin Phoenix) is one such lad. He won't listen to his elders, his brothers and one day his stubbornness leads to the death of his oldest brother Sitka (DB Sweeney).

Brother Bear

Instead of being contrite, he is angry at the bear that he blames for causing the accident and despite that animal being his spirit's totem, he kills it.

In order to teach the arrogant youth a lesson he is transformed into a bear and is forced to see things through an animal's eyes.

He must travel through the forest to where the light touches the Earth and hope that he can change back into human form.

Along the way he picks up an orphan bear cub called Koda (Jeremy Suarez) who is initially annoying but eventually Kenai comes to love the young fellow.

Brother Bear is a wonderful heart-warming story about growing up and learning from your mistakes.

The animations are terrific and the video transfer is fantastic.

There are a heap of laughs to be had in Brother Bear - mainly due to two stupid moose called Rutt (Rick Moranis) and Tuke (Dave Thomas), who sound as if they are constantly munching on marijuana plants - and also two even more dopey rams who can't quite work out what echoes are.

Conclusion: Movie 90% Extras 80%
