Bruce Almighty

Review by James Anthony

We’ve all bad days, in fact we’ve all had really shitty days, but poor old TV reporter bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) has had an absolute shocker.

So much so that he furiously abuses God – not usually a good thing to do – and gives him one hell of a sledging.

Unfortunately for Bruce, the good Lord (Morgan Freeman) is listening and decides to show him that being the supreme being is not easy or fun.

Bruce Almighty

However, it has to be said that for viewers Bruce being given the powers of God is massively funny.

So a skeptical Bruce heads off as the great one and manages to do such things as parting tomato soup, mucking around with the moon and stars to make it a more romantic night with his girlfriend (Jennifer Anniston) among other things.

The trouble is that while using his powers to get his own life back in order he’s tended to stuff it up for everyone else.

He’s not been answering prayers and when he grants all of them at once to get rid of the backlog he unleashes major chaos upon the world. We’ll not mention the earthquake and floods his repositioning of the stars has caused around the globe.

Almighty Bruce is a hugely enjoyable romp with Carrey being reasonably restrained as God. He’s exceptionally likeable and all you want is for him to have a good life.

Morgan Freeman is (as usual) just wonderful as the wise old head, that is God in this case, and he takes a nicely savage delight in showing Bruce that being in charge is not easy.

Jennifer Anniston is good as Bruce’s love, but finds it hard to compete with the scene-stealing fellows.

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras N/A
