As Velma, a convicted double murderer, she absolutely kicks
ass (in more ways than one) and shows she is not only a superb
actress, but a fantastic singer and damn good dancer.
Her song He Had It Comin' steals the movie and Z-J
can be suitably proud of her efforts.
Chicago is a musical and it is the tale of the women
on Murderesses Row in Cook County Jail and focusses on poor
little Roxie (Renee Zellweger) a calculating killer who bumped
off her boyfriend because he fibbed to her.
She was desperate to break into the jazz club scene and so
while her body is trapped in prison, her mind is free to star
in fanciful nightclub acts.
These song-and-dance routines are superbly done and Zellweger
shows she is not only a great actress, but can be quite a
good little hoofer as well.
Richard Gere, who plays a greedy lawyer, is nowhere near
the level of singing/dancing as the gals, but you can forgive
his efforts because he too is terrific when just acting.
There is an excellent number in Chicago called Razzle-Dazzle
'Em and basically that's what the movie did to the academy.
Chicago is not a fantastic movie, but it is clever
and witty and very well done.
The video transfer is superb and the sound does justice to
the film's songs.
Very good, but more for musical fans than movie buffs.
Conclusion: Movie 80% Extras 80%
