Goodbye Mr Chips

When you think of Martin Clunes the immediate image that pops into the old noodle is an overweight yobbo straight out of Men Behaving Badly.

It clearly is an unfair pigeonholing of the actor who, in the remake of Goodbye Mr Chips, is just utterly wonderful.

Clunes' performance is first-rate and there is not the trace of bad behaviour in the tale of an ordinary teacher who has an extraordinary influence upon the lives of his students.

Set in Victorian and Edwardian England, Goodbye Mr Chips begins with Chips starting at Brookfield, a public boys school.

What follows is the long journey of his life and career and it is done so beautifully and caringly that everyone associated with this has to be applauded.

There are ups and downs, tragedies, laughs and, at the end, a feeling of satisfaction that you have spent just over an hour and a half watching good old quality entertainment.

The video transfer quality is very good - no major impediments - and the sound clear.

As said, Clunes is superb and he makes the on-screen changes from young teacher to old man seemingly effortlessly. It isn't just the make-up - which is some of the best these eyes have seen - but his portrayal of a weakening body but still strong mind.

TV movies don't get any better than this.

Conclusion: Movie 90%
