 Color Me Kubrick

Review by Clint Morris

The always-brilliant John Malkovich is at his best in Color Me Kubrick, a comedy based on the true story of a conman who tried to pass himself off as filmmaker Stanley Kubrick (The ShiningEyes Wide Shut). And succeeded – kinda.

Clour Me Kubrick

Despite looking nothing like Kubrick – which is rather obvious, considering Malkovich himself doesn’t share any similarities to the late director - Alan Conway was able to get meetings with the big-timers, swindle them out of money, and basically pitch projects that nearly got made.

All because, nobody bothered to do a google and see what Stanley Kubrick actually looked like (for the record, the late director was a big burly man with a balding noggin’ and a bushy beard).

One of the films producers notes that the film has three messages: “One, anyone can be Stanley Kubrick. Two, all crimes perpetrated in the name of celebrity will be rewarded by celebrity itself. Three, if you ever meet a celebrity, watch your wallet.”

Color Me Kubrick isn’t laugh-out-loud funny, and it does omit some terribly big missed opportunities, but it’s an enjoyable and rather interesting chronicle of one of today’s most unique crimes.
