Unlike
music, where you have the aid of instruments to create mood and
feeling, comedy is created in the space between what someone can get
you to imagine and your expectation being subverted.
That is all it is,
sort of.
I
am a big comedy nerd, so when I saw the line-up for this DVD, I was
pretty happy. Basically, if you are into alternative comedy, this is
the disc for you.
Two and a half hours of comedy goodness from
the likes of Zach Galifianakis, Sarah Silverman, Dana Gould, Patton
Oswalt and David Cross, to name just five.
Of course, being that
there are so many acts on the bill, each performer only gets 5-10
minutes to do their thing. So if you're already a big enough fan to
know the greatest hits of a performer's set, you might be sitting
through material you know off by heart.
And if you're not a nerd, well, good for you.
There
is always that paradox with comedy that if you make the effort to
really be a fan and check out other performances online you get
punished when the comedian does the exact same material you'e heard
before.
But if you hadn't checked them out online, you wouldn't have gone to see him/her.
Still,
there is great stuff all around, whether it's David Cross and Jon
Benjamin's meta-humour or Zach Galifianakis in character as his brother
Seth deliberately bombing (and if you like this kind of thing, check
out Zach’s DVD Live at the Purple Onion).
Elsewhere
Dana Gould effortlessly demonstrates why he is considered one of the
best in the business, while Eugene Mirman delivers on the absurdism
front.
You won't have to sit through any hacky airline food
jokes or "amusing differences between men and women" jokes. It is all
good.
Be warned though: if you don't actually like comedy, this probably isn't for you.
These are comedian's comedians and they aren't afraid to be funny.
DVD EXTRAS
Extras include some behind the scenes action, a short history of the Troubadour and Patton Oswalt's run-in with a heckler.
