For non-cricket buffs, the Don retired with a batting average
of 99.94. The best batsmen since have been struggling to average
over 50.
He was a gentleman of the sport and is a wonderful icon of
the wonderful game.
The film footage is bordering on the ancient and so the transfer
will not be perfect, but for sports buffs will give you some
lovely imagery of the early Bradman career, the infamous Bodyline
series - where the English bent the rules to beat Australia
- and the historic 1948 tour of England.
The second programme on the DVD, The Invincibles,
goes into greater detail on that famous tour, where the Australians
became the only side to tour England undefeated in any game.
It was immediately post-World War II and the British needed
something to cheer themselves up and forget about wartime
and its still-present food rationing.
One of the interesting things is the fact that Bradman wanted
the team to eat exactly what the locals had to and so they
played on the pitiful rations avialable - half a slice of
toast and a mushroom for breakfast.
The Invincibles includes footage from the Bradman interview,
but adds some marvellous ones of the surviving members of
the team.
There are some fantastic stories told and the old fellows
(as they are now) have a wonderful twinkle in their eyes as
they remember one of cricket's highest moments.
Together these docos make a wonderful partnership.
