The Cutting Edge
(1992) was nothing that would ever have been unspooled for the patrons
of the Kodak theatre, but it was certainly entertaining. A vibrant and
rather amusing rom-com about an uptight ice skater that’s forced
to team with a cocky hockey (ah, that rhymes!) player, it starred Moira
Kelly and D.B Sweeney.
Kelly and Sweeney are nowhere to be seen in the
sequel – but their characters are. Yep, we've got the
‘older’ versions of Kate and Doug, now the parents of this
films titular teenage tyrant, played by newcomer Christy Carlson Romano.
The only part of this rather yawnable sequel that
isn’t a rehash – it’s essentially the same deal,
except he’s an inline skater, not a hockey player – is the
first act. Refreshingly, the film doesn’t start with the twosome
hating each other and then falling in love by the end of the film, as
the first film had it. Nope, this time around, the two actually fall in
love first. It’s only after their relationship goes awry that
they’re forced to team up. The rest? Best watched on fast-forward.
If you’re a 16-year-old teenage girl, and
you’ve never seen the original, than this might rock your
boat….but if you’re a fan of the crowd-pleasing original,
this is one cheap direct-to-video sequel that you’re better off
not knowing about.
