The Home Guard of Walmington-On-Sea is back on parade under the command of Captain Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe).

He is supported in a rather effete fashion by Sergeant Wilson (John Le Mesurier); an upper class gent with more than an eye for the ladies.

The rest of the platoon; Lance Corporal Jones (Clive Dunn), Privates Frazer (John Laurie), Walker (James Beck), Godfrey (Arnold Ridley) and Pike (Ian Lavender), are loyal to the cause but inept.

Apart from the Huns their archenemy is officious Air raid Warden (Bill Pertwee) who is always ready to sabotage Mainwaring's Men, be it in love or war.

No Spring For Frazer: The machine gun spring is lost. Has undertaker Frazer dropped it in a coffin?

Mum's Army: Captain Mainwaring is recruiting women to swell the ranks. Frazer recommends 'firm bodies with big strong thighs'; but the Captain has higher ambitions.

Menace from the Deep: Pike has lost the food, and the boat, when the cry of ancient mariners is heard.

When Did You Last See Your money? Jones tries to pay a half-pound of sausages into his bank account. What has happened to the cash?

The Honourable Man: Sergeant Wilson has been elevated to the aristocracy. When a hero of the Soviet Union visits who has precedence, a Captain or a Honourable Sergeant?

Dad's Army was inspired by the experiences Producer David Croft had when he served with the Home Guard.

What started as a limited series ran for years. For many of the elderly actors it was the start of a new career and the characters they created became household favourites.

And so did their phrases… "You stupid boy!" (Captain Mainwaring to Private Pike). "They don't like it up 'em, the cold steel. They…Do…Not… Like …It…Up…'Em!" (Corporal Jones with bayonet). "We're doomed, I tell you, doo…oomed. Aye we're doomed!" (Private Frazer in pessimistic mood).

The laughs are as plentiful today as when they were first performed. Recently a mother played an episode to her young old children. From the kitchen she could hear them laughing. Later she asked why they had enjoyed it. Their reply was, 'It's such fun to see old people behaving so stupidly'!

Captain Mainwaring couldn't have put it any better.

Conclusion: 90% Extras: 90%.
