Dead Heat

This is a DVD that caught me very much by surprise and was a really enjoyable yarn to sit through. It stars Kiefer Sutherland and Anthony Lapaglia as two half-brothers who buy a broken down race horse together.

Sutherland is Pally LaMarr, a just-retired cop who has a chronic heart condition and one heck of a thirst for whiskey.

His bother Ray is a wheeler and dealer, well, a bit of an Arthur Daley character really, and he knows that this horse only has to have a small blockage removed from its throat to become the champion horse it once promised to be.

Ray also knows of a jockey - albeit one with a gambling problem - who can help them take the horse to greatness and them to riches. His name is Tony LaRoche and is played as very dodgy by an excellent Lothaire Bluteau.

Anyway, together Ray and Pally finds themselves in real trouble as LaRoche just can't stop gambling and leaves them with a massive debt to local nasty Frank Finnegan (Daniel Benzali) who sees the potential in the horse and proceeds to steal it.

The boys then go to get it back and land themselves in extremely hot water. I have to say that Dead Heat is a very entertaining movie filled with humour, action and excellent performances all around.

Sutherland is at his most accessible and his character, while not always likeable, definitely wins your support. Lapaglia is terrific as Ray - this guy is a brilliant actor. Bluteau is first-class as the hopeless gambler, while Benzali is a very nasty tough guy and Radha Mitchell a gorgeous almost-ex-wife of Pally's.

Sometimes the movie goes a little over the top, but overall it is worthy of having a look at.

Conclusion: Movie 80%, Extras 0%
