Without putting too fine a point on it - Jaws so scared the living daylights out of this impressionable young fellow that swimming in the sea became a test of nerves and scuba diving the only safe way to check out what was cruising around underneath your flapping feet.

Having only taken two decades to get over that nasty bit of film-making, Deep Blue Sea has stuffed surf-beach frolics up for the rest of my life.

The premise of the film is that a young scientist has discovered the perfect way to stop brain disorders in humans and that is by harvesting material from the brains of sharks.

Trouble is that sharks' brains are not that big and so the answer is to increase their size.

Sounds good, but the swimming eating machines then get incredibly smart and during a fortuitous hurricane, manage to turn the tables on their captors and kick some serious human butt.

Deep Blue Sea is one of those movies that works exceptionally well, once you've suspended belief in matters real and just cruise along with the story's flow.

It is exciting, nerve-wracking and ... in one part ... bowel-evacuating.

The cinematography is excellent, the cast performs well and the visual effects are stunning. This is a movie well worth looking at.

Conclusion: Movie: 80%. Extras: 80%
