Detroit Rock City

The 1970s have long been reviled as a sort-of-nothing decade that slotted anonymously between the hippie '60s and the greedy '80s.

Yet, for those of us who were teens in the late '70s nothing could be further from the truth.

Hey, those sooky hippies and gelled-down greedies had nothing on the generation that shocked adults with Alice Cooper, pogo-ed to Punk Rock and New Wave and sneered at disco bunnies.

It was pre-responsibility and pre-AIDS and life for a teen was a hectic round of parties, rock music and even more parties.

Those long-gone days have even faded as memories but watching Detroit Rock City has brought the glorious times for 17-year-olds back with a passion.

Okay, the guys in Detroit Rock City are mega Kiss fans - and while they were a semi-acceptable band to follow it could never be said they would threaten the Genesis albums in this bloke's record collection.

But for Jam, Hawk, Lex and Trip the whole reason for their existence is to get to see Kiss live. Twice before they've been close to achieving rock nirvana by attending a Kiss concert, but fate had always dealt an unkind hand.

Now they've got four tickets and Detroit is but a short drive away. Only problem is that the tickets are destroyed by a seriously uptight religious mum and suddenly finding new ways to get to the concert take on emergency status.

The soundtrack is excellent and you realize that there was a lot of good music around in those times and you'll find yourself checking out the credits to find out the name of the song/band whose music you liked but have half forgotten.

For mine, it was Cheap Trick and Surrender. The trials and tribulations of the four are very funny and there were so many hilarious moments in Detroit Rock City they are hard to detail. But the toilet scene, the male strip joint and the delicious payback of the smartarse young Kiss hood are excellent.

This is not brain food, this is a sit down and relax DVD that will have late-thirty-somethings reliving their teens and teens wishing they had been part of it.

Hugely enjoyable!

Conclusion: Movie: 90% DVD Extras: 70%
