So to say that the anticipation surrounding my next Dexter
binge session was mind numbingly intense is nothing short of an
understatement. I gathered together a swag of snacks that were bad for
me, one giant fluffy blanket, parked the couch far to close to the TV
screen and cuddled up with the girlfriend and embarked on a 13 hour
journey for the second time.
And, yet again, not one minute was wasted.
The big question looming at the end of the first season of Dexter (a crime-comedy following a 'cop by day, serial killer') was : Where To From Here?
Everything
had been tied up in a neat little package, Dexter's character was well
drawn and had come full circle - would we simply be subjected to more
of the same (House-style)?
Fear
not, the first twist occurs mere moments into the opening episode in
which we find Dearly Devoted Dexter having a few problems. It seems the
events of the previous season have left poor Dex (played to perfection
by Michael C Hall) murderously impotent. A slight twist, a twist which
opens a whole new world of possibilities - but a twist so simple not
many would see it's genius coming.
Add to this problem (I wonder
if there is a "Murder Nose Spray" to help with his "little problem"?)
that Sergeant Doakes' suspicions
about him are growing as well as treasure hunters discovering Dexter’s
underwater
dumping ground for his victims.
So now, Dexter must hide in
plain sight. A man in the head of the action of a case where everyone
(including his friends and sister) are trying to solve the mystery...
It's
such a complex and satisfying program to watch. Every character is
given so much to chew on, it's funny and it carries on the old-style
"What Will Happen Next - Stay Tuned To The Same Bat Channel" form of
story telling which makes Dexter the single most captivating show on TV.
The big question, much like last year, is : Where To From Here?
Everything
gets ties up nice and neat, and there is that slight
hesitation venturing onwards with shows as good as this -
simply because it's so painful if three years down the track it just
starts to suck. There are very few shows that just get better and
better - will Dexter go down in history as one of them?
As it stands, yes.
A truly superb show - and a phenomenal second season on par with the first.
DVD EXTRAS
After sitting through almost 13 straight hours of television, you would assume the last thing on anyone's brain would be Extras.
Afraid not - I was still hungry for more.
Included
are a whole bunch of cast interviews, which on any other DVD I would
probably not even waste my time. But for some reason, we sat with
baited breath absorbing every word from the phenomenal cast members who
flesh out the world of Dexter.
Without hesitation, there should be a Dexter DVD collection in every home. It's that good!
Conclusion:
Movie 95% Extras: 70%
