Dexter's Laboratory: Series 1

Review by Sean Lynch

You never feel as old as you are until you realise that a cartoon that you remembered being "New", is now considered a "Classic".

I still recall the breath of fresh air that was Johnny Bravo, Cow & Chicken  and Dexter's Laboratory when they hit the airwaves of Cartoon Network - back when Foxtel was made up of an impressive 30 Channels (it's now in the hundreds). And looking back - I can still see why I loved it.

Cartoon Network

Dextor's Laboratory is the story of a young boy prodigy (something which would be tweaked slightly later on by Nickelodeon as Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius). Born with an extraordinary mind, Dexter has built his very own extremely high tech and expansive laboratory in his room that NASA could only dream of. But Dexter has to keep his lab a secret for fear others will exploit it. Through out the years, Dexter has had to hide his lab from his parents... but mostly his sister Dee Dee - which is no easy task.

The brilliant aspect of this show is, that opposed to the traditional "hero" angle, Dexter was in fact the younger version of the "Mad Scientist". He is, in the end, the bad guy. It's a formula which would later be used for plenty more kids cartoons - the untold stories of the "Evil Genius" that is always foiled by the good guy. It's the perfect setting for comedy, and it really works better than most sitcoms aimed at adults.

While you can certainly see that the animation style has dated (it was made in the mid-nineties, just prior to the computer revolution - so you can really see the dirty grain of the film), the humour stands up quite well.

Whether or not the kids still love it remains a mystery (with the output of entertainment for kids these days, it's hard to believe they'll like anything for longer than 10 minutes), but one thing remains certain - as an adult, I still love it - and imagine I will for many more years to come.

Bring on the Rocko's Modern Life DVD box set!!

EXTRAS

As always, these Madman releases always have some pretty extensive extras. It's a real credit to the DVD format when distributor goes to so much effort, and thankfully Madman know what sort of fans their dealing with (you'll noticed that most of the cult stuff comes out of their offices).

Included here is some cool little packaging extras including a limited edition door hanger and a reversible slick.

There's also two very scratchy Pilot episodes: "Changes" and "The Big Sister", which give a good insight into the development of the series.

A must have for 90s kids ready for a good dose of nostalgia!

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras: 65%
