This puts the angel (Eugene Levy) in deep poo with his boss
Mr King (Chazz Palminteri) and the pair quickly need to rectify
the matter before God hears about it.
They look out for a "loaner" - an undiscovered
dead body that Barton can borrow while a permanent physical
form can be found - and the only one available is that of
a billionaire murdered by his wife and her lover.
The billionaire was, as you would expect, an uncaring swine
and Barton finds himself copping a lot of flak from his staff,
associates and an activist (Regina King) who wants to save
a public hospital for the poor.
Needless to say, Barton turns the rich man into a nice man
and somehow romance is in the air.
Now, if you've seen Heaven Can Wait, that terrific
comedy from Warren Beatty, you'll know the score.
However, while amusing, Down to Earth cannot
compare with Beatty's version. It lacks the style and, it
has to be said, it took a long time to warm to Rock's character.
The support cast is good with Levy, Palminteri and Frankie
Fason (Barton's agent) all boosting the movie with nice comic
touches.
Despite this, Down to Earth is a bit timid and while
watchable won't earn any end-of-year awards for best picture.
Conclusion: Movie 70%, Extras 30%
