Although somewhat weakened by the years of Roger Moore,
the raw power of James Bond was established by Sean Connery,
who made the British secret agent a charming killer who was
ruthless to the max.
Hard, though it may be, for modern audiences to appreciate,
but the original Bond must have hit the swinging '60s like
a sledgehammer.
Here he is, this debonair Connery, telling an out-of-bullets
bad guy: "It's a Smith and Wesson, you've had your six."
Shooting him once, then finishing him off - in the back -
while the bloke's on the floor. That would have frightened
the muesli-munching hippies! Sensational stuff.
Dr No has our Mr Bond up against the title character,
who is out to destroy the American space program. To do so,
the Dr has built a secret facility on a small Caribbean island
and is determined to keep it secret - by killing anyone who
finds out about it.
Unfortunately, for his dastardly plans, Dr No kills a British
agent and so the Brits throw 007 at them and he is in no mood
for taking prisoners.
Dr No is a classic Bond and for any devotee of the
series the chance to see it's very first steps in movie legend
is something to be savoured. Get the DVD, put it into the
player and then count the number of Bondisms that are still
used in the latest episodes of his adventures.
Conclusion: Movie 80%, Extras 90%
