Dukes of Hazzard: Season 1

Review by Clint Morris

It’s probably daggy to come right out and say "The Dukes is Cool!", but the truth of the matter is, it is, or, well, was, in 1979 anyway.

Slightly risqué for it’s time (Daisy Duke’s short’s couldn’t possibly have gotten any shorter, the understated hint of dirty humour couldn’t be anymore apparent) and about as different as every other show that was on air at the time, this pre-A-Team pre-Knight Rider, action romp almost single-handedly grabbed the attention of every pre and post pubescent male around the globe in it’s primary 42 minute episode.

Dukes of Hazzard: Season 1

Created by writer-producer Gy Waldron and inspired by his own 1975 bootlegging comedy, Moonrunners, the Red-Neck weekly series centred on a couple of hoons (Wopat and Schneider) who’re constantly trying to stay one step ahead, or in this case, one mile ahead of the local sheriff and the town impresario.

Little more than a rehash of the episode that aired each respective week before, the series wasn’t interested in being smart or telling much of a story, it was merely a weekly showcase of car-stunts and silly stuff.

The DVD features all 13 episodes from the first season of the ‘so bad, it’s good’ series, with optional commentary on the first episode by Schneider and Catherine Bach (Daisy Duke).

“Dukes” probably won’t fly off the shelves as fast as the General-lee took corners, but there’s sure to be interest for it in some counties.

DVD Extras

There are a few extras on the final disc including a preview of the new video-game, an interesting series of interviews with real-life racing car drivers/Duke fans and predominatly, a BBQ reunion which has the cast catching up for some ribs and a bit of a chinwag.

Unfortunately, Tom Wopat was missing, which hurts the extras a tad.

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras: 60%
