Kind Hearts and Coronets:

An unscrupulous heir (Denis Price) eliminates eight members of the D'Ascoyne family (each played by Alec Guinness) who stand between him and the inheritance.

Set in Edwardian times, it is a very witty and, when it was produced, groundbreaking comedy film.

Although the acting honours must go to Alec Guinness in all his eight roles; Denis Price is perfect as the urbane villain.

The Lavender Hill Mob:

A meek and mild bank clerk who has safely delivered gold bullion from the Bank of England to his bank's head office for the past twenty years decides to steal a shipment.

He brings into the scheme an old friend (Stanley Holloway) and two petty thieves (Sidney James and Alfie Bass) are recruited for professional assistance. Amusing situations and dialogue from four of the best character actors of their time make this comedy caper film a joy to view.

The Man in the White Suit:

A scientist (Alec Guinness) invents a fabric that never gets dirty or wears out, much to the dismay of the unions and his own management.

Everything comes together in this movie; a brilliant idea, a funny and incisive script, tight direction and energetic performances.

The heroine (Joan Greenwood, also in Kind Hearts and Coronets) must be singled out as having one of the sexiest voices on film.

The Ladykillers:

An old lady takes in a sinister lodger (Alec Guinness). He and his four friends commit a robbery. When she finds out they plan to kill her, but the pensioner has a surprise for them!

A very talented cast that includes Peter Sellers, Frankie Howard, Kenneth Connor, Cecil Parker, Katie Johnson, Herbert Lom and Jack Warner are upstaged by the lead's false teeth!

Writer William Rose gained an Academy Award nomination for his original script. The only one in this quartet to be shot in colour the picture quality is very uneven.

Conclusion: 90% Extras: 35%.
